Apapa Club is an exclusive community of professionals, business leaders, and social enthusiasts who value excellence, networking, and recreation. Our club provides a refined atmosphere for social interactions, business networking, and leisure activities in one of Lagos’ most historic and distinguished institutions.
The Apapa Club was named following a colonial tradition of naming recreational clubs after their location. It joined the ranks of clubs like the Sokoto Club and Ikoyi Club. Founded in Apapa, Lagos, the Club was officially incorporated on February 21, 1930, under the Land Perpetual Succession Ordinance of 1924. Shortly after incorporation, on April 9, 1930, the land currently occupied by the Club was assigned by the colonial administration for a token annual fee of One Pound. Initial structures included a temporary wooden clubhouse and tennis ground, established by the founding trustees: Sam R. Baker, Turnville Gardener, and Edward Otter.
By 1943, recognizing the deteriorating condition of the wooden buildings, the Club sought to build a more permanent structure. With limited funds, a request for a loan of £2,500 was made to the Nigerian Government. After a series of correspondences, a loan of £2,000 was approved in 1944, leading to the construction of the main Club House. To secure the loan, the Club trustees entered a mortgage agreement on May 31, 1944, with the land serving as collateral. The trustees at the time were Norman Turner, Edward Henry Jones, and George Ernest Cook. The loan, with an interest rate of 4% per annum, was repaid ahead of schedule by 1955.
The Apapa Club has long served as a vital social and recreational center for both government and commercial residents in the Apapa district. Throughout its history, it has maintained its inclusive ethos by welcoming members from diverse professional backgrounds and providing amenities and leisure for all. The Club has continuously upheld values of camaraderie, service, and community engagement, establishing itself as a cherished institution within Lagos.
As Apapa Club moves forward, it continues to embrace innovation while staying true to its prestigious legacy. With an ever-growing network of distinguished members and continuous enhancements to its offerings, the club remains a symbol of excellence and an enduring pillar of Lagos’ social and business landscape.
